September 2023 Bulletin

Our annual Flower & Vegetable Show is Saturday September 9th, so only a few days to go!  Are you coming?  We’re using the same venue that we moved to last year Crownway Community Centre, Crown Street, Earlestown, WA12 9DA.  We have people from well outside Newton, that come to exhibit and visit from all over the North West, and this location now means more locals can see what a good community event is right on their doorsteps.

It’s only 20p to put in each exhibit and please don’t think you’re not good enough to do it – only those who are in it can win it and sometimes the winner could easily have been beaten if there’d been enough competition.

So, the formalities. Exhibitors can set up on Friday night (8h) 7– 9pm or on Saturday morning 8 – 10.30am. You can ring in your entries to Marj our Show Secretary (07805407475) or send her an email to nlwgashow@aol.com up until 8pm on the Thursday night. Or just turn up on the Friday or Saturday at these times.

If you’ve been before, please check the schedule first.   We’ve made a small change to the vegetable presentation rules (see page 4 of the schedule) and a couple more changes in the vegetable exhibit list, following feedback from exhibitors last year. There is also clarification of what is and isn’t allowed in class 81, the Novice Grower.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, ask any of the stewards in the yellow jackets and they will show you the ropes.  All vases are provided, the only container not provided is Class 69 the basket/trug for the mixed garden produce, bring your own for that one.  All the details are in the schedule and if you didn’t get to the Hut in time, it’s downloadable by clicking HERE. There’ll also be some available for you to take when you come on Friday/Saturday.  You can see photos of Shows over the last few years on the website too. (Past Shows)

If you’re coming to see what you’ve won, or to have a good look round at all the exhibits whether you’ve entered or not, doors open at 2pm and it’s free.  Parking is in the streets surrounding the Centre and there is a car park just a little way down the street. The cafe will be open where you can buy tea, coffee and lots of homemade cakes; and there’s also the tombola as always.

Presentation of awards and prizes will start at 4.15 as well as the draw for the raffle which once again have an impressive selection of prizes. This year, any produce that hasn’t been reserved by the exhibitors, we ask that you leave in place, we will be donating these to the local food bank.

All clearing away of produce by the exhibitors will not be allowed until the presentation of awards has been completed. And if you want to stay behind and help us clear up, that would be wonderful.

Don’t forget, the Hut is NOT open on the day of the Show but will be open as usual on the Sunday (10th) following.

That’s it, I hope to see you all next Saturday as a visitor or as an exhibitor or both, do come, it’s a fun afternoon out and you’ll be supporting your community too.
