October 2023 Bulletin

This is the last bulletin I am scheduled to do for this season, (unless something hugely important occurs).

Hut Closure

The last day before shutting up the Hut for winter will be Sunday, 29th October, so do get everything you think you might need before then.

Last Orders

Potato orders have now closed. You will now have to wait until they arrive in January and choose from what we have spare for next year.  There will be a good assortment but perhaps not what you could have pre-ordered.  Seed orders will still be taken up to the end of October, for those that wish to.

ALL SEEDS LEFT ON THE SEED RACKS ARE HALF PRICE FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER.

Pumpkin Competition

There will be a pumpkin competition on Sunday (15th) on the Allotments, when we will be doing tea, coffee and cake with all money going to Charity.

The Show 2023

The Show went very well again this year. The number of exhibitors was up but there were less entries, particularly in the veg and fruit – that may well have been because of the appalling “summer” weather in July and August.   The dahlias were particularly strong this year, gladiolus made a good showing which doesn’t often happen at our Show which is later than most of the local ones and all the cookery sections had plenty of entries.  The Novice category did not have many entries again and considering there’s a rather nice trophy, it’s well worth having a go if you’re new to vegetable growing.  Thanks to all who volunteered in helping the Show go so well.

The Show 2024

Next year, the subject matter for the 3 Photography categories have been decided and are as follows:

  • Berries
  • Pond life
  • Gate(s)

Again, there will also be a photography class aimed at u12’s for schools /scouts /brownies /any other children’s groups as well as individuals. The subject is “What I have grown”, which will be judged on best content and use of produce. We did not get any entries for this category this year so we’re hoping we’ll find more interest next year.

The cake decision has to wait – once again, the committee have the very difficult task of blind sampling so many recipes and the decision will hopefully be announced in the Spring newsletter and on Facebook.

Hut Rotas 2024

All Hut helpers should have received their rotas for next year from Sheila, any queries please contact her – 07931270056 / 01942716925 or email graham_red@yahoo.co.uk

One Last Note

So that’s it from me and the rest of the committee for this year.  Our next communication will probably be the twice-yearly newsletter; the Spring edition will be despatched at the very beginning of January via email this time, to all those who have given us their e-address.  For those who haven’t got an email address, it will be sent via post, but doing this way will now represent a huge saving in postal charges. And of course, don’t forget our Facebook page which is gradually accumulating more followers and always worth a look for any new bits of information. www.facebook.com/NLWGA

After 29th October we will not be open again until the New Year which is from Saturday 6th January 2024 – so Happy Christmas!!!!!
