Newton Le Willows Gardeners Association
@ The Hut
When I woke on the morning of the show to torrential rain and wind I had a real worry about the show, but to my delight both exhibitors and the public turned out in force to give us their support despite the weather, with a beautiful display of both flowers and vegetables across all categories. Special thanks to both Penkford School for the loan of the school for the day,and as our main sponsors the Rotary club of Newton the Willows for jointly presenting the awards. Also to all our helpers and sponsors of the individual classes.
Over the years we have come to expect the best exhibit in show to be awarded to one of our many excellent exhibitors in the flower classes but this year we were astounded by one of the vegetable exhibits an enormous Parsnip which was so long it had to have its own table. How on earth do you not only grow such a specimen but then get it out of the ground afterwards?

One of our oldest members, Bert Jackson sadly passed away earlier this year. In his memory and love for all things to do with gardening and his allotment, his family have kindly donated a new trophy to be known as the “Bert Jackson Merorial Trophy” to the NLWGA. The award will be made to novice members who have recently joined the association in order to encourage the next generation to take up gardening and become involved in the show.
The category attracted a number of entrants with some splendid produce from these first time gardeners with the trophy being awarded to Kieron Brockley by member of the family. A twist which only came to light after the show is that Kieron was one one who took over Berts old allotment plot on Rob lane. We can only think that there is one very happy gardener looking down from above with a very wide grin on his face. Clearly all the hard work Bert put into his plot over many years has already reaped a benefit.
